By on January 11, 2018

A finished basement is a wonderful addition to any home. It adds value and more livable space. If you’re considering basement remodeling Northern VA, here are a few tips to get you started.

1.    The drier the better

Before you do anything, check for water issues in your basement. Look for pools of water or moisture around the walls and floors. Check outside to ensure the ground is properly graded away from your foundation. If you find any cracks, be sure to do repairs before starting any remodeling work.

2.    Keep to the code

Check with your local authorities and see if you’re required to get any sort of permits. Plumping and electricity often have inspection requirements.

3.    Look to the fasteners

The walls and floors of a basement are almost always made from cement or brick. You won’t be able to use normal nails or screws. You’ll need to find the right fasteners and anchors for any sort of framework that you want to achieve.

4.    Bar moisture

Even after you’ve inspected for water pools and cleared those issues, the fact of the matter is: your basement is underground. It is still highly susceptible to moisture problems. You need to create a vapor barrier for the walls and floors.

It’s good practice to create the barrier and then wait a day or two to inspect and ensure there is no moisture coming through.

5.    Make an offset space

Even with a vapor barrier, moisture has a sneaky way of finding its way inside. With an offset wall, you create yet another barrier to Mother Nature and protect your investment that much more.

6.    Insulation

Just like the walls of the house proper, you’ll need insulation to regulate the temperature in your basement. For best results, choose insulation with vapor barriers on both sides.
